The South Shore of islands is often quite different than the North Shore. Growing up on the 148th largest island in the world, New York’s Long Island, weekends were often spent at Robert Moses beach on the South shore with its deep expansive sands and sand dunes. The vistas there were much different from the pebbly North Shore beaches around Oyster Bay. Robert Moses State Park on the South Shore was my favorite beach with its Sand Dunes and great waves for body-surfing.
Hurricane Sandy during the last week of October 2012 has eroded much of the beach away and damaged the access roads including the traffic circle around the lighthouse that serves as a beacon for directions.
